You hold me close,
I start to wheeze.
My disease
has seized
what's left of me.
I see your tears
tainting tired eyes;
but it's no surprise
as we say our goodbyes
and I hate that you're sad;
my pain's so bad;
but yours must be worse
to lose the one that means most,
one so close
but baby, don't be scared
as my vision dims
and I suffer
for my sins.
I promise to wait
as my illness burns
in the cleansing fires of
hell.

Comprehension: Chapter Two
Again, the fox curses herself. The poor kit has lived her entire life in the den, not knowing what it means to play or have friends. She makes a promise to herself: she will at least keep herself and her kit alive until spring, and she will show her better times; that Mother Nature isn't always cruel.
~*~*~*~*~
Shallow sleep. Wind dances on her cheek, whispering nonsense into her ear. Her stomach adds to the noise, growling incoherent curses. Her spine shivers from Mother Nature's icy touch. She hums along to the song; she's heard it so many times before. The song of life. Harsh. Cold. Uncaring. Indifferent. Pain. Suffering. Hunger.
Still
Your face is as red
as the blood from my chest.
Your veins are popping,
mine have no life left.
I didn't fix your dinner quite
the way you like;
And I tried to refuse your demands
in our bedroom last night.
Not that it mattered,
you still got your way.
I'd never thought to run,
I was always to afraid.
But now, I wish I had;
I see you walking down the hall.
I am here in heaven,
I can do nothing at all.
The door is shut, locked down tight,
but you easily kick it down.
You enter the pink flowered room,
silently looking around.
You hear a small, faint whisper
from behind the closet door.
When you open it, you find our
littl
There's darkness all around me,
I cannot see at all.
Why won't somebody help me;
hear my desperate call?
I'm completely lost,
I don't know where to go.
Where I'm coming, where I'm going;
these things I do not know.
Yet, there, off in the distance,
I see a soft white glow.
That tiny light gives me just
the faintest glimmer of Hope.
Though I can't see the way, or
the dangers lying in wait;
and I am quite unsure of
my destiny; my fate.
I have to keep on walking,
I know this in my soul:
You can't give up, you must keep going if
you wish to reach your goal.
You hold me close,
I start to wheeze.
